Kathy Tran Announces Re-Election for House of Delegates in the New 18th District

West Springfield, VA — Kathy Tran announced that she is running for re-election from her home in the heart of the new 18th district. She released the following statement:

I’m excited to announce my candidacy for the new 18th House district.

I came to this country as a boat refugee from Vietnam with my parents when I was a toddler. My parents made the difficult decision to leave everything they knew in search of hope, opportunity, and freedom in the United States. When you have lived under an oppressive regime, you deeply appreciate your individual freedoms, like being able to read and learn, to make decisions about your family for your family, and to participate in your government and vote.

We see these very freedoms under attack today in Virginia. There’s a push to ban books, to limit the stories that are taught in our history classes, to roll back reproductive choice, and to make it harder to vote and undermine our democracy.

My husband, Matt, and I are proud to raise our five kids in this community and we cherish the bonds we have formed with our neighbors. After my parents risked our lives for our freedom, I can’t sit in the sidelines while my children’s fundamental rights are under threat. I’m running for re-election to fight for our rights and build a more just and equitable future for all of our kids.

I am honored to already represent so many residents of the 18th district since 2017 and I look forward to meeting and earning the support of new voters.”

Kathy was first elected to the House of Delegates in 2017 and has quickly established herself as a legislative leader in the House of Delegates. She has introduced legislation to expand health care and address medical debt, increase abortion rights, improve workers’ rights, honor our military families, support individuals with disabilities, protect our environment, and make Virginia more welcoming and inclusive.

Kathy was recently elected Chair of the Virginia Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus, a caucus that she helped form after seeing a rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Virginia.

Kathy and her husband Matt live in West Springfield with their five children. You can find more information about Kathy on her website: https://www.kathyfordelegate.com/
