Redistricting Updates

General Assembly and Congressional Maps

As I mentioned previously, the Virginia Supreme Court is now in charge of drawing new maps for the General Assembly and Virginia’s congressional delegation. The court appointed two “special masters” to draft maps, one recommended by Virginia Democrats and one by Virginia Republicans.

The Supreme Court’s special masters have released their draft maps, one each for the house of delegates, state senate, and Virginia’s representatives to the United States House of Representatives. You can view the proposed maps here.

I encourage you to review the maps and provide comments. The Supreme Court will accept written comments until 1pm on December 20. You can submit written comments by emailing redistricting@vacourts.gov or providing comments on the maps themselves. (Click the “SHOW ME HOW” button on the top right of the map to watch a video explaining how to add comments.)

The Supreme Court will also be holding two online public hearings to receive public comments on December 15 and 17 from 1pm to 4pm. To participate in the public hearings, email the Clerk of Court at least 24 hours prior to the meeting at redistricting@vacourts.gov, saying that you would like to provide public comment and which date you would prefer.

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Maps

This week, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved new magisterial district maps for the County.

The maps maintain seven seats on the Board of Supervisors and School Board and change some precincts to different magisterial districts. The precincts in the 42nd district that change are:

  • 827 - Irving (from Springfield District to Braddock District)

  • 840 - West Springfield (from Springfield District to Lee District)

To comply with the Virginia Rights of Voters Act of 2021, the new maps must be certified by the Office of the Attorney General before they take effect.

DMV Walk Up Services

On Wednesday, December 15, Virginia DMV will resume walk-in service on Wednesdays across the Commonwealth. The DMV will continue appointment-only services on Mondays and Fridays.

As I mentioned in an earlier newsletter, the DMV has already re-opened for walk-in services on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The General Assembly included a provision in the final budget during the August Special Session that required the DMV to plan for reopening for walk-in services.

If you need services from the DMV, you can make an appointment online or find the DMV location closest to you. Please reach out to my office if you need assistance.
