Updates from state agencies
State Revenue Update
On June 30, we concluded Virginia’s fiscal year 2020. Governor Northam and his team originally predicted Virginia would face a budget shortfall of $1 billion for fiscal year 2020. Instead, we have concluded the fiscal year with a $236.5 million deficit.
There is still uncertainty on the impact of COVID-19 for the current biennial budget, which started July 1 and covers fiscal years 2021 and 2022. As I shared previously, the Governor’s team will be reforecasting our revenues. We will use that information to finalize our biennial budget in the upcoming Special Legislative Session.
Updates from Fairfax County
Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) Re-Opening
Starting July 13, all FCPL branches will open select “express services” that can be completed in person. You can find a list of the available services and requirements for patrons here.
Updates from Fairfax County Public Schools
Superintendent Brabrand announced the FCPS School Board has accepted his recommendation to delay the start of the 2020-2021 academic year to September 8. He anticipates the school year will still conclude on the original, planned timeline of June 11, 2021.
As a reminder, FCPS has extended the deadline for families to indicate which return-to-school option they are selecting for their child(ren) to July 15. FCPS families should have received information about these options from FCPS; you can complete the form via phone or online here.
