Updates from Governor Northam and state agencies
Enforcement of State Re-Opening Requirements
While overall state data shows that the percent of positive of COVID-19 tests continue to trend downward, there are geographic areas and communities where the data is concerning.
As such, today, Governor Northam announced that Virginia will be stepping up enforcement of its requirements on businesses and Virginians that are aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19 and protecting our public health.
The Virginia Department of Health will be conducting unannounced inspections across Virginia, with a focus on the Hampton Roads region, to ensure businesses are following all physical distancing and face covering requirements.
If you have concerns as a customer that a business is not requiring employees to wear face coverings OR if you are concerned about individuals not following Governor Northman’s Executive Order 63, which requires Virginians to wear face coverings in certain public spaces, you can contact the Virginia Department of Health at 1-877-ASK-VDH3.
Guidance for Schools
As I mentioned previously, the Virginia Department of Education has updated its guidelines for the re-opening of schools. Decisions on how and when students will return will be determined by local school boards. The state guidance is available here.
The State Council for Higher Education for Virginia continues to review re-opening plans from colleges and universities.
Support for Workers
The Virginia Employment Commission and Virginia Career Works are working with state agencies and companies to hold a statewide virtual hiring event on July 28. During the “Help Virginians Get Back to Work” event, over 150 employers will have job postings available. Registration is free and is here. More information is available here.
Please let me know if you are experiencing any issues with your applications for unemployment benefits and are unable to connect with the Virginia Employment Commission. You can email me at DelKTran@house.virginia.gov or call 804-698-1042.
Safety Standards for Workers
The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry and the Virginia Safety and Health Board are working to finalize safety standards for workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. More information will be forthcoming from the state agencies.
